About & Data Sources

How UniIQ works · Where the data comes from

What is UniIQ?

UniIQ is a free college comparison tool built to give students an honest picture of campus life — not just rankings and acceptance rates. It currently covers 145 schools across 500+ data points in 27 categories, including things traditional tools skip entirely: dining quality, political climate, weather, Greek life, wellness resources, and community vibe.

The site has no ads and no sponsors. Data comes from official university sources, federal databases, and verified third-party aggregators — with direct links to primary sources wherever possible.

How Subjective Scores Work

Some categories — like "happiness," "political climate," "dining quality," and "social scene" — are inherently harder to quantify than tuition costs or acceptance rates. Here's how we handle them:

Happiness Drawn from Niche's student review scores and Princeton Review's "Happy Students" list, weighted by review volume. These are student-reported, not administrator-reported.

Political Climate Based on Niche campus political leaning data, Princeton Review surveys, and publicly available student voter registration patterns. Described qualitatively (e.g. "Strongly Liberal") rather than as a precise number.

Dining Quality Princeton Review annual "Best Campus Food" rankings combined with Niche dining scores. Higher scores reflect sustained top rankings over multiple years.

Social Scene Composite of party scene ratings (Princeton Review), Greek life participation rate, and number of registered student organizations per capita.

Update Frequency

UniIQ is updated manually as official sources publish new data. Most academic and admissions data reflects the 2025–26 academic year. Cost figures are updated when schools publish new net price calculators (typically each fall). Acceptance rate trends run through the Class of 2029.

Weather data uses multi-year NOAA historical averages and does not change year-to-year. Crime statistics reflect the most recent Clery Act report available for each school.

Limitations & Verification

UniIQ is a starting point, not the final word. Student experience varies enormously within a single campus — major, housing, friend group, and personal background all shape what college feels like. Data that looks identical on paper can produce very different lived experiences.

Always verify important figures directly with the school — especially financial aid estimates, housing availability, and admissions deadlines. For every data point that links to a source, we encourage you to follow that link.
